IELTS – Your Pathway to Global Opportunities
What is IELTS?
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is one of the most recognized and respected English language proficiency tests in the world. Whether you’re looking to study, work, or migrate to an English-speaking country, IELTS is your gateway to success. It evaluates your abilities in four key language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking.
IELTS Test Categories
The IELTS test is divided into three main categories:
• IELTS Academic: Designed for those applying for higher education or professional registration in an English-speaking environment. It assesses whether you are ready to begin studying or training in English.
• IELTS General Training: Suitable for those who are going to English-speaking countries for secondary education, work experience, or training programs. It is also a requirement for migration to countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK.
• IELTS Life Skills (A1 and B1): Specifically designed to meet the requirements of UK Visas and Immigration. The A1 Life Skills test is intended for individuals who need to prove their English speaking and listening skills as part of a visa application to live in the UK with a family member or spouse. The B1 Life Skills test is for those applying for indefinite leave to remain or citizenship.
IELTS Modules
The IELTS test consists of four modules:
1. Listening (30 minutes): You will listen to four recordings of native English speakers and then write your answers to a series of questions.
2. Reading (60 minutes): The Reading section includes 40 questions, designed to test a wide range of reading skills. The Academic and General Training tests differ slightly in the reading materials provided.
3. Writing (60 minutes): The Writing section of the IELTS Academic includes two tasks, while the General Training version also includes two tasks but with different contexts.
4. Speaking (10–15 minutes): The Speaking test is a face-to-face interview with a certified examiner. It is designed to assess your use of spoken English and consists of three parts: an introduction and interview, a long turn where you speak on a particular topic, and a two-way discussion.
Note: The IELTS Life Skills test focuses solely on the Speaking and Listening modules, lasting about 16-18 minutes for A1 and 22 minutes for B1. It is a pass/fail test designed to meet the specific immigration requirements of the UK.
IELTS Scoring and Bands
IELTS is scored on a 9-band scale, with each band corresponding to a specific level of English proficiency:
• Band 9: Expert User
• Band 8: Very Good User
• Band 7: Good User
• Band 6: Competent User
• Band 5: Modest User
• Band 4: Limited User
• Band 3: Extremely Limited User
